"Racer Bob" attended his first limited inboard race at Ford Lake (Ypsilanti
MI) in 1972, and 2 years later qualified as a driver on the same race
course in a Ron Jones "145" kit boat, S-421 Aeroplane. In 1974 he
ordered a brand new Ed Karelsen "225" cab-over [where the driver sits
forward of the engine].
In 1977 he won his first major race, the Southland Sweepstakes in St. Petersburg Florida, running against Country Boy, Tiger, Deel Me In, Super Star, PaynPak and a bunch of other top notch competitors. A photo of "Racer Bob" on his way to the win was featured on the cover of the APBA's Propeller magazine (seen below). He has driven at least a dozen boats since that time, his current boat is a 2.5 Litre Modified Ron Jones hydro and was the 2002 MACH series champion. |
